The question that comes to mind for me as I re-read is this: What has society taught Americans about coping with personal tragedy? We have high rates of depression, we are a highly medicated society, we cant sleep at night, we eat ourselves to death, we shoot each other at insane rates, we respond to pain in unhealthy ways all the time. Many of the narratives that stand out in my mind are those in which women suffered and used drugs to cope. I also had questions about how the women would cope with the losses that occurred while they were in prison- loss of family/parents, loss of experience of raising kids. Sadly there were also women who felt regret and wished for a second chance but because of the extreme sentences they wont feel relief from that regret. How does one cope with that? The other aspects of the stories that stand out are similar to the 1st reading: Role of men in getting women incarcerated Many women didnt know they were getting involved in anything Incompetent attorneys Illegal informants Impact of imprisonment on children I still see much of the same language in these womens narratives as Ive seen in my 5 years working in the domestic violence field. They use this language not only to describe inter-personal relationships but to describe their position in relation to the justice system.
